1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
1Q84 is set in 1984 and begins with Aomame, a fitness instructor and assassin, climbing down an emergency stairwell and finding herself in an alternate reality she comes to call 1Q84. Rumor has that the changes in this new reality, including a second moon in the sky, are the workings of a secretive cult. Tengo is a math tutor and writer who is asked to ghostwrite a teenager's short story about a fantasy world of Little People. The teenage girl is a wonder to Tengo, beautiful but damaged, barely able to read and write. She also claims to be the daughter of the leader of the cult. Tengo begins writing his own novel along the lines of George Orwell's 1984, whose main characters are Aomame and himself. He sets out to find Aomame, unaware that she's looking for him. Haruki Murakami's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel saying, "Take the time to get carried away, and time itself - as well as the way you think about how you spend yours - will take on new dimensions. It's a mind-blowing experience. Great novels always are."
