Abarat by Clive Barker

Clive Barker takes a respite from his horror novels to write a young adult book which is the first of a four-book series. It is also a difficult book to describe. Candy Quackenbush is transported from her boring home town of Chickentown by a magical wave to the archipelago of Abarat, where each island is a different hour of the day. Candy finds she must help save Abarat from dark, treacherous foes older than time itself. Clive Barker has never been one stifled by lack of imagination and Abarat is a trip to a realm where his creativity runs wild. The Green Man Review calls this "a beautiful book, filled with images and wonders, dreams and nightmares and everything in between."
