After This by Alice McDermott
After This is the story of the Keane family over 30 years. In Manhattan after World War II, Mary meets John Keane, an injured war veteran, and they marry, raising their Catholic family on Long Island. They have four children, sons Jacob and Michael and daughters Annie and Clare. It's quiet and sensitive Jacob who is sent to Vietnam instead of the fearless Michael. The girls deal with ongoing changes in women's role in society including the sexual revolution. Each chapter is another important time in the family's life. Alice McDermott's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "It is no secret that Alice McDermott, winner of the 1998 National Book Award for Charming Billy, is a writer of many talents, but to read her new novel, After This, is to be reminded how rare her gifts are."
