All Is Vanity by Christina Schwarz
In All Is Vanity, Christina Schwarz (author of Drowning Ruth) brings us the story of Margaret Snyder who decides to write a novel as a means to achieve celebrity and success. Unfortunately, once she quits her job to do it, she finds a lack of inspiration and motivation. She gets e-mails from her best friend, Letty, whose improving lifestyle in California becomes the object of Margaret's envy. Margaret begins to use the stories in Letty's e-mails for her novel and at the same time, plots to bring Letty back down to her level. She'll make it up to Letty once she's rich and famous. The San Francisco Chronicle says of All Is Vanity, "The book can be read as a cautionary tale about hubris, a morality play about women's friendship or a terrific inside joke from a writer with her head screwed on straight. In all cases, the book is a blast."
