All Over Creation by Ruth Ozeki
Ruth Ozeki (author of My Year of Meats) tells the story of Yumi Fuller, daughter of a fundamentalist father and Japanese mother, who fled their home in Idaho at the age of fifteen after having an abortion. Now at 40 and with both her parents near death, Yumi returns home with her three children. Yumi has trouble taking care of her kids and herself, so the prospect of taking care of her dying parents is beyond her capabilities. At the same time, a group of environmentalists called the Seeds of Resistance have come to pay homage to Yumi's parents and fight the agribusinesses that are trying to foist genetically engineered potatoes on the local farmers. It's a personal struggle for Yumi to make peace with her past and find a meaning in her present. The San Francisco Chronicle says, "Ozeki has created a novel at once educational and entertaining, with multidimensional characters and an engaging narrative voice. It will appeal to anyone interested in love or agriculture or politics or family drama or friendship or childhood or the earth. In short, its appeal is as wide as the creation it champions."
