American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House by Jon Meacham
American Lion is another Andrew Jackson biography, but one that focuses on his 8-year Presidency. Jackson's earlier exploits from his days as an orphan through his wartime heroics helped shape the man who was never to shy away from a fight over a cause he believed in. He was the founder of the Democratic Party and a staunch believer that the power of the federal government emanated from its citizens, not the powerful elite who made decisions in back rooms. He held his friends close and declared those who spurned them were his enemies too. At the same time, he forged slavery compromises and evicted Indians from their ancestral lands leading to the Trail of Tears. Jon Meacham's biography has received mostly positive reviews with the USA Today saying, "You finish American Lion with mixed feelings about Jackson. He was many things: charming, cruel, clever, courageous, committed to the Union. But never dull."
