American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century by Kevin Phillips
In American Theocracy, former Republican strategist Kevin Phillips looks at the present state of the country, and doesn't like what he sees. He looks back in history at other superpowers that crumbled, and believes he finds parallels to today's world. Three areas are the major causes of concern: oil, religion, and debt. The nation's consumption of oil continues to run headlong into dwindling reserves and competition for energy reserves from other countries such as China. Phillips sees the war on terror as really a war for energy. The rise of fundamentalist religion from the South creates an atmosphere that stifles growth and innovation. The growing debt carried by the country leaves a promissory note that will eventually come due. While the U.S. may stumble, other growing powers such as China may step in to replace it. Kevin Phillips' book has received mixed reviews (expected in today's partisan climate) with the Cleveland Plain Dealer saying, "Readers who can weather a dense journey will find lightning flashes of insight in American Theocracy."
