Arlington Park by Rachel Cusk
Arlington Park is an English middle-class suburb where the men go off to work leaving their wives behind simmering with anger and regret at their lives. Set over the course of one day, Juliet, Amanda, Solly, Maisie and Christine lament the qualities of life they've either lost or never attained. Juliet is angry at all men, having given up her dreams for her husband and family. Amanda is obsessed with death and uses housework to assuage her fear. Solly is pregnant with her fourth child and weary under its effects. Maisie feels she lives the life she's supposed to live, not the one she wants. Christine throws the dinner party that brings them all together. Rachel Cusk's examination of domestic unhappiness has received mostly positive reviews with The Independent saying, "Cusk writes fearlessly of untrammelled anger; boredom, and small, significant epiphanies. Everything, in fact, which constitutes daily life in all its minutiae and magnificence."
