The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach
The Art of Fielding is set in Westish College in Wisconsin, a small school whose only claim to fame is its connection to Herman Melville. Henry Skrimshander is the star shortstop for the baseball team, and under the tutelage of team captain Mike Schwartz, he's about to tie the record for consecutive errorless games. Instead, Henry uncorks a wild throw that beans his philosophy-reading friend and roommate, Owen Dunne. Henry then develops the yips, unable to correctly throw the ball to first base anymore. Owen falls into a relationship with the college president, Guert Affenlight, who puts his own career in jeopardy in pursuing Owen. Guert's daughter, running from a short-lived marriage, comes between Henry and Mike. Chad Harbach's debut novel has received positive reviews with BookPage saying, "There aren't many books of 500 pages that feel too short. But like a true fan enjoying a game of baseball as it scrolls its leisurely signature across a summer afternoon, there are moments when you will find yourself wishing The Art of Fielding would never end. It's that good."
