The Associate in John Grisham's novel is Kyle McAvoy, the editor-in-chief of The Yale Law Journal who looked forward to becoming a lawyer and giving back to the community. He's approached by a recruiter for huge law firm in Manhattan. He has with him evidence that Kyle was at a fraternity party where a woman was raped, and he blackmails Kyle into joining the law firm. Once he starts working there, he's harassed, overworked, and forced to participate in industrial espionage. Kyle finally has enough and starts to put together a plan to extricate himself from their clutches.
The Associate has received mostly positive reviews with the Boston Globe saying,
The Associate is an absorbing thriller that's a fitting follow-up to
The Firm."
