Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Disasters, Titanic Storms and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories by Simon Winchester
Atlantic is Simon Winchester's collection of stories, trivia, and history of the Atlantic Ocean. Borrowing from Shakespeare's seven stages of man, he arranges his story of the Atlantic in seven stages of its life. He tells of its start when the supercontinent of Pangaea split apart and water filled the growing basin. It remained an uncrossed body of water until about a thousand years ago, now regularly crossed by supertankers and by airplanes multiple times a day. It's played a pivotal role in the history of Europe, Africa, and the Americas, yet it's been overfished and treated like a dumping ground. Along the way, Simon Winchester fills in with his own personal experiences as well as sharing little known facts that fill in the historical record of the ocean. Atlantic has received positive reviews with BookPage saying, "To read Atlantic is to take a fantastic voyage filled with romance, drama, tragedy and inspiration. Simon Winchester has once again written a masterpiece of nonfiction, one that likely will be as enduring as manís eternal quest for adventure on the high seas."
