Banishing Verona by Margot Livesey
Banishing Verona centers around Zeke and Verona. He's renovating a house in London when Verona shows up unannounced, spends two nights with him, and disappears. Zeke suffers from Asperger's syndrome which makes it difficult for him to read facial expressions or tell when someone is lying. Verona is a radio talk show host who is older, hot-tempered, and seven months pregnant. She flees to Boston to help her brother who is in trouble with gangsters, who are threatening her too. She sends word to Zeke to join them. To do so, he would have to overcome several phobias and deal with his father's imminent death and the possibility he'd have to take over the family grocery. Margot Livesey's novel about the complications of falling in love has received mostly positive reviews. The Seattle Times says, "Banishing Verona is an eloquent and entertaining examination of what it takes to muster a little faith in human relations, despite those 'games.'"
