Bay of Souls by Robert Stone
Michael Ahearn is an unhappily married English professor at a Midwest college when he encounters an exotic new faculty member from the Caribbean, Lara Purcell. They begin an intense passionate affair and he follows her back to her native island of St. Trinity. She believes her soul was stolen during a voodoo ceremony and only another voodoo ceremony can retrieve it for her. Michael Ahearn finds himself thrust into a world of corruption, smuggling, political intrigue, ritual, and superstition. This is a novel that has gathered mixed reviews, but the New York Times says that author Robert Stone "gives us another wild ride."
