The Best People In The World revolves around three people in Paducah, Kentucky in 1972, 17-year-old Thomas Mahey, his 25-year old English teacher, Alice Rowe, and the town vagabond and self-proclaimed anarchist, Shiloh Tanager. Thomas falls in love with Alice and befriends Shiloh, deciding he's his role model. When Shiloh gets in trouble, the trio hit the road. When they're unable to join a commune in the Vermont countryside, the find an abandoned farm house in the backwoods they decide to make their home. Shiloh manages to bring water and electricity to the house and three enjoy a summer of rural idyll. With the advent of the harsh winter, meager resources and severe weather test their bonds, and Shiloh's friend Parker arrives, bringing violence and secrets from the past, and their promise of life away from the things of man begins to unravel.
