The Better Angels of our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined by Steven Pinker
In The Better Angels of our Nature, Steven Pinker proposes the theory that we're living in the least violent time in human history. Despite the millions of war deaths and genocides in the last century, his research shows that as a percentage of total population, these deaths are fewer than any time in our past. It's not just wars, but murders and personal violence as well. Pinker proposes that the improvement in human nature and its rejection of violence as the default approach to settling conflict between states and persons. The Better Angels of our Nature has received mostly positive reviews with the New York Times saying, "The Better Angels of our Nature is a supremely important book. To have command of so much research, spread across so many different fields, is a masterly achievement. Pinker convincingly demonstrates that there has been a dramatic decline in violence, and he is persuasive about the causes of that decline."
