Between Each Breath by Adam Thorpe
At the center of Between Each Breath is successful English composer Jack Middleton, who also happens to be married to a wealthy woman and living the tony lifestyle in Hampstead. Jack travels to Estonia in search of musical inspiration and falls into an affair with a local waitress and violinist named Kaja. His lust satisfied, he leaves her and returns home to his pregnant wife. His wife remains unaware of his adultery and she miscarries the baby. Six years later, Kaja arrives in London with a boy in tow, eager to introduce him to his father, Jack. Jack's carefully constructed life implodes, losing all that was valuable to him, if any of it was really of any value to begin with. Adam Thorpe's novel has received positive reviews with The Guardian saying, "Between Each Breath is funny, well-observed and thought-provoking."
