Blood of Victory by Alan Furst
Alan Furst is renowned for his historical spy thrillers and he's back with another gem. His setting this time is Eastern Europe and a British attempt the disrupt the supply of Romanian oil that fuels the Nazi war machine. In typical thriller fashion, the story ranges from Istanbul to Bucharest to Belgrade, and from river docks and whorehouses to yachts. What sets this book apart is the author's attention to detail and characterization and ability to set a time and place in a era already fraught with peril. The Detroit Free Press calls Blood of Victory "immensely entertaining, of course, in no small part because Furst writes beautifully, in sinuous sentences that murmur like a lover in your ear."
