The Bookman's Promise by John Dunning

The Bookman's Promise brings back Cliff Janeway, ex-cop and bookstore owner. Janeway wants to own a rare, first edition of a great book, and buys at auction a signed first-edition of a book by the famed explorer Richard Burton. Soon after, a dying woman emerges who claims that his book, and other Burton material, belonged to her grandfather before the Civil War and should rightfully be hers. Janeway promises to see if he can find her grandfather's missing collection, which leads him east to Baltimore and Charleston, and the mystery of the undocumented three months Burton spent in the south. Janeway's search leads to assault and murder and heightened interest in the Burton book he does have. The Bookman's Promise has received positive reviews with the Miami Herald saying, "John Dunning's new novel is a guaranteed high-five moment for suspense lovers."
