Border Songs by Jim Lynch
Border Songs is set along the U.S.-Canadian border in Washington. Brandon Vanderkool is a huge young man with severe dyslexia. He's been raised on a farm that abuts the border and used to be able to cross it at will. With the new border security, he gets a job as a Border Patrol agent. With his total immersion in the natural world, he's able to notice subtle changes that indicate a smuggler's passing. He gains notoriety when he catches a couple high profile smugglers and terrorists. He's falling for a young woman, though, who lives across the border and whose family is involved in a marijuana smuggling operation. What had once been a simple, rural life becomes increasingly complex. Jim Lynch's novel has received positive reviews with BookReporter.com saying, "Border Songs is no fluff piece, either. It confronts important contemporary issues, exposes some of our solutions as giant wastes of money, and shows how one person really can make a difference. Besides, it is a darned good read."
