The Broker by John Grisham
In The Broker, Joel Backman was a powerful man and lobbyist in Washington, DC, making more enemies than friends with his arrogance and greed. He's convicted of trying to sell software that controls spy satellites, but after serving only 6 years of a 20-year sentence, he's surprised with a pardon from the outgoing president. The government gives him a new identity and hides him in a safe house in northern Italy. Joel quickly discovers that he's hidden in plain sight and that his own government wants to find out who will kill him to keep him quiet. Joel has to quickly learn the Italian language and culture so he can blend into his background. He also secretly contacts his son, a respected lawyer back in Virginia, for any assistance he can provide. This is John Grisham's first spy novel and The Broker has received mostly positive reviews. The Boston Globe calls it "a fast-paced, fun read with echoes of something deeper."
