Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros
Sandra Cisneros' Caremelo is narrated by Lala Reyes, the youngest of seven children in a Mexican-American family living in Chicago. Each summer, the family makes a pilgrimage to Lala's grandparents' home in Mexico. Lala not only recounts the story of the trips and her adventures on both sides of the border, but also tells the story of her grandparents' lives. With all the lies and embellishments added, however, the true story may never be known. Caramelo is a novel that celebrates and castigates both cultures, yet is infused with warmth and humanity. It's received lots of high praise. The New York Times calls it "enchanting."
