Child of My Heart by Alice McDermott

In Child of My Heart, Alice McDermott, winner of the 1999 National Book Award, brings us the story of Theresa, an attractive 15-year old girl. Her middle-class parents live in affluent East Hampton in hopes that her beauty and way with children will create more opportunities for her. Theresa is comfortable in the world of children but as she takes her first steps into womanhood, she finds she must start to leave that behind for the world of men and their attention. Most critics are passing high praise for this book and Alice McDermott's subtle but powerful writing style.
