The Chrysanthemum Palace by Bruce Wagner
The Chrysanthemum Palace is Hollywood seen through the eyes of the children of the rich and famous. Bertie Krohn is the son of the creator of the longest running space opera on television, "Starwatch: The Navigators." Bertie is a struggling actor and screenwriter and his life has been defined by his father's exploits. His friends are Clea Freemantle, the daughter of a long-dead beautiful and famous film star, and Thad Michelet, son of a famous and tyrannical author who's won almost every literary prize. These three all guest star in one episode of Starwatch, Bertie tells the story of those two weeks and how their lives, experiences, and thoughts are dominated by their parents. Bruce Wagner's scathing critique of Hollywood has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "If The Great Gatsby were set in contemporary Hollywood, it might look a lot like The Chrysanthemum Palace. These are Americans, ensnared by their fate but gallant and brave to the end."
