Come Dance With Me by Russell Hoban

In Come Dance With Me, Christabel Alderton is a 54-year old lead singer for a goth-rock band, and Elias Newman is a 62-year old doctor who specializes in diabetes. They first meet at an art exhibit where her first words to him are "Komm tanze mit mir!" which is from a German ballad Elias' mother used to sing to him. Christabel is uneasy starting a relationship with Elias since she brings bad luck to the men in her life. All her lovers, as well as her toddler son, have died. When she flies off to Hawaii to mark the anniversary of her son's death, Elias must decide whether to pursue her or not. Russell Hoban uses this autumnal love affair to explore the idea that we have to make space in our lives to leave room for love. Come Dance With Me has received mostly positive reviews with The Guardian saying, "The real humour in the book comes from its shifting perspective: as we hear first Christabel's voice, then Elias's, then an outsider's, we experience the joyful, bewildering excitement of seeing a complex situation from several angles. It's like looking into the eyes of a Picasso. Or peeking inside the head of one of our more intriguing authors."
