The Confession by John Grisham
In The Confession, Travis Boyette has been paroled from prison in Kansas and he suffers from an inoperable brain tumor. Travis approaches a local minister, Keith Schroeder, with his dilemma. Nine years earlier, Travis raped and killed a cheerleader in Texas, burying her body which hasn't ever been found. The state of Texas, though, convicted a football player, Donte Drumm, of the girl's murder and he's about to be executed. Donte confessed to the crime after being beaten by police, the prosecutors are convinced they have the right man, and the governor routinely ignores requests for clemency. Travis and Keith head to Texas, in violation of his parole, to try to save the innocent Donte from being executed. John Grisham's novel has received mostly positive reviews with USA Today saying, "Grisham is the master of the legal thriller. Readers who share his views as well as those sitting on the fence will find much to love and lament in the tragic story of Donte Drumm."
