December 6 by Martin Cruz Smith
(This book is titled Tokyo Station outside the U.S. and Canada)
Martin Cruz Smith (Gorky Park, Rose) is a master at writing mysteries set in exotic locales with characters we come to know intimately. In December 6, he creates a new character, Harry Niles, and places him in Tokyo on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Harry is immersed in the Japanese culture, but as a gaijin (foreigner), he knows he'll never be accepted as a native would be. Problems abound for Harry, alternatively in trouble with the gangsters, his girlfriend, irate husbands, and the Japanese government who thinks he might be a spy. And perhaps he is. The Houston Chronicle calls December 6, "a crackling, riveting adventure, deserving a place alongside the best of the best."
