The Devil's Company by David Liss
The Devil's Company is David Liss' third historical novel featuring Benjamin Weaver who is, again, deeply involved in complex financial conspiracies. Weaver is hired by a mysterious man named Jerome Cobb in order to win a large amount of money in a fixed card game. The fix, however, is set against Weaver who is now indebted to Cobb, as is the rest of his family. Weaver is forced to participate in industrial espionage against the British East India Company and then infiltrate them as an employee. He finds the company to be a ruthless and immoral entity, and a series of double crosses and real or faked deaths pushes Weaver deeper into a series of events that threaten him as well. The Devil's Company has received positive reviews with BookReporter.com saying, "The Devil's Company is written in an entrancing style that will have readers in a constant state of suspense as the novel keeps the surprises coming with a taut depiction of corporate espionage and the birth of the modern corporation."
