The Devil's Punchbowl by Greg Iles
With The Devil's Punchbowl, Greg Iles brings back Penn Cage, a former prosecutor who is now mayor of his hometown, Natchez, Mississippi. To reinvigorate its struggling economy, Natchez has embraced river boat gambling. Most of the casinos cooperate well with the town, but Penn hears rumors of dog fighting and underage prostitution involving one of the casinos. When one of his childhood friends is murdered, Penn sets about to bring to justice the men responsible for the murder. Doing so, though, put Penn, as well as family and friends, in harm's way. The Devil's Punchbowl has received mostly positive reviews with the Madison County Herald saying, "The action is nonstop; the suspense, a race against time. Kick off your summer with a shot of pure Greg Iles adrenaline. Cheer for the good guys. Sneer at the villains. Gasp at the peril. This read is as fun as a steamboat melodrama."
