The Dirty Girls Social Club by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez
The Diry Girls Social Club is about six Latina women, who call themselves the sucias -- the dirty girls, who move from college at Boston University into professional life. They're all a mixture of different ethnic backgrounds and must deal with life and careers as women, but also as minorities. They meet twice a year to catch up on each other's lives and offer advice to the similar prejudices and misinformation they encounter as Latina women. Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez's debut novel gives a peek into a world most people never see, or never see correctly. The Diry Girls Social Club has met with mixed reviews, but the Rocky Mountain News says, "she has created fully formed women with guts who find their glory."
