The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian
In The Double Bind, Laurel Estabrook is a college sophomore at the University of Vermont who is attacked and nearly killed while biking on a country road. She withdraws into herself and her photography, and eventually volunteers to work at a homeless shelter. When one of the homeless men, Bobbie Crocker, dies and leaves behind a box of photographs, Laurel realizes he was once a photographer of some merit. She finds in his collection a photograph of a woman riding a bicycle on the same road where she was attacked. She also finds photographs of her hometown, West Egg, New York, that appears to include children of Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby. As she digs deeper into Bobbie Crocker's past, others are intent on dissuading her from that task. Chris Bohjalian's novel has received mixed reviews with the Rocky Mountain News saying, "Bohjalian takes a mysterious situation and transforms it into a novel of immense imagination and emotion."
