Drives Like A Dream by Porter Shreve
In Drives Like A Dream Lydia Modine is a 61-year old automobile historian and both her father and ex-husband, Cy, worked in the automotive industry. Her two sons and daughter all live far from Detroit and they only come back into town when Cy marries a woman half his age. Lydia is left with all the detritus from their lives and feels like the cars she writes about, good only for the memories of the past. Her only constant contact with her family is with her only daughter who blames her for all the ills in her life. Lydia concocts a lie in an attempt to get her children back in her life, or perhaps drive them away forever. Porter Shreve (author of The Obituary Writer) delivers a novel about a woman trying to find her place in life when she's no longer needed. Drives Like A Dream has received mixed reviews with the Washington Post saying, "Drives Like A Dream is a beautiful novel, carefully put together, full of charming secondary characters, charitable to all, even -- or especially -- Cy and his prissy new wife."
