The English Roses by Madonna
Madonna's book The English Roses is a straightforward moralistic tale. Four young girls have formed a clique and shares clothes and sleepovers. They all dislike another girl named Binah, who is smart, pretty, and kind. One night during a sleepover, a fairy godmother takes the four girls to see Binah's life, where she has no mother and takes care of her father. The girls then decide that Binah needs neither envy or pity, just friendship. The release of The English Roses by Madonna is an event unto itself and has generated reviews from both ends of the spectrum. Still, it's a book for young girls, and its merits, or lack thereof, should be decided on that basis.
