Eudora Welty: A Biography by Suzanne Marrs
Eudora Welty, the famed Southern writer of short stories, is often thought of as a gentle, Southern lady who rarely strayed far from her Mississippi home. Suzanne Marrs, professor of English at Millsaps College in Jackson and Welty's friend, shows her to be a woman who liked to travel and had some unconventional romances. Her relationship with Kenneth Millar (writer Ross Macdonald) was passionate enough that even if it wasn't consummated, it caused Millar's wife to be very jealous of Welty. Welty has attended Columbia, worked for the New York Review of Books for a while, and was no stranger to New York's parties and night clubs. Yet Mississippi was the home she loved, cherishing her family and friends, and source of inspiration for her fiction. Eudora Welty has received mostly positive reviews with the New York Times calling it "the thoroughly respectful and straightforward biography its honest, modest, intensely private subject would have wanted."
