The City of Your Final Destination by Peter Cameron
Peter Cameron's The City of Your Final Destination tells the story of Omar Razaghi, and eager graduate student who receives a fellowship to write an authorized biography of Jules Gund, a Jewish emigre in Uruguay who wrote one beautiful novel and killed himself when he couldn't write another. Omar's problem is that he never got authorization from Jules' wife or mistress or brother, who all still live together in Uruguay. Omar's pushy girlfriend convinces him he must go to Uruguay to get their permissions to avoid losing his fellowship, his job, and possibly her. Omar's arrival at the Gund estate upsets the status quo there and sets off a course of recriminations and machinations that changes everybody's lives. Salon.com calls it "a generous, sunny book, with just enough shadows to hint at the mysterious territory that lies beneath its surface."
