From A to X: A Story in Letters by John Berger
From A to X is a series of letters written from a woman named A'ida to her lover, Xavier, (and Xavier's own writings on the back of the letters) who is serving two life sentences in prison for acts of terror. A'ida is a pharmacist in the town of Suse in an unnamed country suffering under an oppressive government. Her letters to Xavier are punctuated with the omnipresent threats from the government forces for those who step out of line, but her letters are mostly concerned with the interactions of friends and communities. They detail the freedom found in just living life, the life that Xavier will not know again. John Berger's Booker-nominated novel has received mixed reviews with The Telegraph saying, "Her determination that her imprisoned lover should not forget the sweets of the outside world gives her letters a thrilling urgency. It is the perfect retort to the unseen forces of authoritarianism that have deprived him of his liberty."
