Generation Kill by Evan Wright
Generation Kill tells the story of the the First Recon Marine Battalion in the early days of the war in Iraq. They were an elite fighting group with disparate backgrounds, led by a Dartmouth-educated lieutenant, and thrown into battles for which they were not trained. Rolling Stone writer Evan Wright was embedded with the group of men, all volunteers, who are eager for battle and trained to kill, but also know that their survival rests on their discipline and cohesion as a group. He chronicles not just their battlefield experiences, but each man both as individual and part of the battalion. Generation Kill has received positive reviews with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch saying of them men in First Recon, "If anything, they are, to a man, enthusiastic exemplars of the contemporary warrior ethos - and all Americans in whose name they are fighting should understand just who they are."
