Ghost Story by Toby Litt
In Ghost Story, Agatha and Paddy are a young couple with a son who move to the coast. Visibly pregnant when they moved, Agatha loses the baby before birth. The grief of the lost child is too much for her to bear, and she slides into mental instabilty with hallucinations. Their son is sent to live with his grandmother so that Agatha won't harm him. Paddy tends to his wife, hoping she returns to rationality and her family. Toby Litt, who prefaces the book with the information that his girlfriend has had three miscarriages, brings his personal pain to the characters in his novel. Ghost Story has received mostly positive reviews with The Guardian saying, "Yet even in the shadow of James, Litt is striving after a new aesthetic, and Ghost Story succeeds as a striking portrayal of how bereavement can overshadow life: the dead can destroy the living."
