The Girl in the Blue Beret by Bobbie Ann Mason
In The Girl in the Blue Beret, Marshall Stone is a widower and retiree, forced into retirement after years as an airline pilot. He decides to go to Europe to find those who saved him during World War II. He had been the co-pilot of a B-17 bomber forced to crash near the French/Belgium border. Ordinary French citizens helped him move out of Nazi reach, often putting their own lives at risk in the process. Marshall realizes he never properly showed his appreciation for their efforts, including the girl in the blue beret. He hopes that finding her will help him find a new purpose in his own life. Bobbie Ann Mason's novel has received positive reviews with the New York Times saying, "Mason has plumbed the moral dimensions of national conflict in the lives of individual participants and produced a deeply moving, relevant novel."
