The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky is set in the 1980s and tells the story of Rachel Morse, an 11-year-old biracial girl who somehow has survived a fall from a Chicago apartment building that killed her mother and siblings. She goes to live with her strict African-American grandmother in Portland. With her light skin and blue eyes, she doesn't fit in with the black community. She struggles through adolescence dealing with grief and alienation, while trying to understand the events that led to the tragedy in Chicago. Heidi W. Durrow's debut novel has received positive reviews with the Dallas Morning News saying, "This is an often painful coming-of-age tale. But it is exquisitely told, and the novel is a fast, satisfying read. Rachel's tale has the potential of becoming seared in your memory."
