The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo begins with Swedish journalist Carl Mikael Blomkvist suffering the disgrace of losing a libel suit. He's hired by CEO Henrik Vanger to find out what happened to his grandniece Harriet, who disappeared as a little girl in 1966. The Vanger family was one of Sweden's wealthiest and powerful families and Henrik believes someone else in the family was responsible. Blomkvist enlists the aid of Lisabeth Salander, a bitter, 24-year-old tattooed woman who is a brilliant computer hacker. Together they begin to uncover Vanger family secrets which some wish to keep them that way. This is a first book in a trilogy from the late author Stieg Larsson and it's received mostly positive reviews. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says, "It's a big, intricately plotted, darkly humorous work, rich with ironies, quirky but believable characters and a literary playfulness that only a master of the genre and its history could bring off."
