The Godfather of Kathmandu by John Burdett
The Godfather of Kathmandu brings back the Thai detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep. He's a devout Buddhist who has found his guru in Tietsin, a lama now living in Kathmandu. Sonchai is struggling with a personal tragedy and he's investigating the murder of a Hollywood filmmaker when he's ordered by his boss, Colonel Vikorn, to arrange a heroin deal that would cement Vikorn's control of illegal trade in Bangkok. Vikorn's rival, General Zinna, will do anything to stop him. Sonchai also discovers that the mastermind behind the heroin trade is none other than Tietsin. Once again, Sonchai is thrown into the dangerous politics and business of his beloved city and must find a way to stay true to his Buddhist principles, solve the crime, and keep his bosses happy. Fortunately, he still has the help of Kimberley Jones (the FBI) and his gender-challenged partner, Lek. John Burdett's latest Bangkok mystery has received mixed reviews with the Boston Globe saying, "In Godfather, the admirably slippery Sonchai Jitpleecheep has taken another wild ride, surviving for at least one more jaundiced, yet hopeful, day."
