Goldengrove by Francine Prose
Goldengrove is set in upstate New York where 13-year-old Nico lives with her parents and her older sister, Margaret. On a lake in a rowboat with Nico, Margaret dives into the water and never resurfaces. Margaret had been their parents' obvious favorite, and they are devastated by her death. Although her parents attempt to comfort and protect her, Nico realizes that their inability to handle their grief has left her to handle the loss on her own. Margaret's boyfriend, Aaron, strikes up a friendship with Nico in an attempt to remake her into Margaret. Nico is just happy for the attention. Francine Prose's novel has received positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "Nico's voice, with its quirky mix of insight and gullibility, will stick in adults' minds, and many younger readers will recognize that voice as their own."
