The Good Son by Michael Gruber
In The Good Son, Theo Laghari, the son of a Pakistani father and American mother, was a Pakistani jihadist against the Russians in Afghanistan as a teenager. His mother, Sonia, brought him back to the States where he joined the army and became a member of a classified Special Forces outfit. When Sonia, a psychotherapist, goes to Pakistan for a peace conference, she and others are taken hostage by terrorists. Theo soon realizes that his only hope to rescue her is to force an American military response, so he plants intelligence that the terrorists have a nuclear weapon. While Theo tries to rescue her, Sonia struggles to keep the hostages unified and the terrorists divided. Even though Theo has planted false intelligence, it turns out the terrorists have surprises of their own. Michael Gruber's novel has received positive reviews with BookPage saying, "Anyone who enjoys suspense, action, adventure and political thrillers will not be disappointed with The Good Son, which keeps the reader hooked through the end.
