A Handbook to Luck by Cristina Garcia
A Handbook to Luck begins in the 1960s and follows the lives of three children into adulthood. Enrique is a Cuban boy who moves to California with his magician father after his mother's accidental death. Marta grows up in revolutionary San Salvador dreaming of a better life. Leila is an Iranian girl born to wealthy parents. Their lives all bring them to America: Enrique becoming a math genius; Marta illegally immigrating to a new life, and Leila attending college. Their lives intersect as each struggles with finding their place in the world while balancing their own dreams against their family obligations. Cristina Garcia's novel has received mostly positive reviews with the Rocky Mountain News saying, "With a poet's ear for language and imagery, Garcia breathes vitality into three ordinary characters who often perform extraordinary deeds."
