Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk
Haunted consists of 23 stories tied together to create a novel. Each story is told by a different writer, who all answered an ad for a three-month writers' retreat, where they are to be removed from all of life's distractions in order to write their masterpieces. They find themselves held captive in a cavernous old theater with heat, power, and food in short supply. They begin to commit evil and atrocious acts upon each other, aware that eventual rescue will bring Hollywood fame and money if their ordeal is horrific enough. Chuck Palahniuk's novel is full of extreme violence and gut-churning events and has received mixed reviews. The San Jose Mercury News says, "Sadly, most readers probably won't be able to withstand the violence of the underlying story to get through all the short stories. This is a pity, for without the gory context, the stories can't quite stand on their own."
