The Havana Room by Colin Harrison
In The Havana Room, Bill Wyeth is a real-estate attorney for a high-powered Manhattan law firm who accidentally kills his son's friend. He loses almost everything, including his job and his family. Unemployed and despondent, he becomes a regular at an antique steak house. There he finds two objects of his longing, Allison Sparks, the manager of the steak house, and the mysterious Havana Room, accessible by invitation only. Allison invites Bill into the Havana Room, and asks him to help a friend with a real estate deal. From there he's thrust into a world of intrigue and danger as Bill finds himself in the darker corners of the city which he's never seen before. The Havana Room has received positive reviews with the New York Times saying, "Mr. Harrison is a master of mood and atmosphere, and he gives us in these pages a noirish New York that's at once recognizable as the day-lighted city we all work in, and as frightening as the nightmare place we all dread."
