Her Name Was Lola by Russell Hoban
In Her Name Was Lola, Max Lesser writes both novels and childrens' stories (much like Russell Hoban). He falls in love with the aristocratic Lola. He also yields to temptation with a Texas vixen named Lula Mae. When both women become pregnant, Max's world unravels. Lula Mae goes back to Texas and Lola and her child move to an alternative therapy center in Scotland. Lola sends a forgetfulness demon so Max will have no memory of her. Max struggles with his stories as a way of telling his own story, in hopes of recovering his memory and the love of Lola. Russell Hoban's novel continues with his unique style of humor, obsession, and a mix of the fantastic with the mundane. Her Name Was Lola has received mostly positive reviews with The Telegraph calling it, "a bit wacky at times, but delivered with brio and possessed of an underlying emotional logic."
