The Hidden by Tobias Hill
In The Hidden, Ben Mercer is an academic who flees England for Greece, leaving behind a failed marriage and some awful act he might have committed. His life in Greece is listless until he meets an old colleague who lets slip about an archaeological dig in the ancient site of Sparta. Ben visits the site which is divided into two camps, one with Greeks and one with foreigners. The foreigners are a tight-knit and secretive group who idolize the ancient Spartan ideals. They finally allow him entrance to their clique and he begins to fall for one of the women, until he realizes that they harbor their own secret plans. Tobias Hill's novel has received positive reviews with The Observer saying, "Like so much else here, most of the connections are merely hinted at, until it becomes apparent that apart from everything else that this novel is - a beautifully paced thriller, a meditation on loss, guilt, obsession - it is also one of the finest novels written so far about this, our age of terror."
