The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch
13-year old Miles O'Malley is a vertically-challenged imsomniac who reads Rachel Carson and explores the beaches of Puget Sound for rare marine specimens in The Highest Tide. When he comes face to face with a dying giant squid on the beach one morning, his life changes forever. He's suddenly a celebrity with his encyclopedic knowledge of marine life and his odd discoveries on the beach. He's hounded, and used, by the media and by a strange cult and Miles starts to believe his own press. For all the attention, he's ignored by his troubled parents, he's infatuated with his former babysitter, and his best friend, an elderly psychic, wants him to help keep her secret of her deteriorating health. When one of her prophecies comes true, Miles realizes he's coming of age into a troubled world, in more ways than one. Jim Lynch's debut novel has received positive reviews with BookPage saying, "This beautiful novel is sure to charm readers with its stunning imagery and amazing characters. The sense of place is so strong in this book that reading it will feel like taking a vacation, and the characters, quirky, flawed and sad as they are, will not easily slip from memory."
