History of a Pleasure Seeker by Richard Mason

History of a Pleasure Seeker begins in 1907 Amsterdam. Piet Barol is a young man of modest means who gains the employment of a hotel magnate to be a tutor to the man's son. The young boy refuses to leave their grand house, repeatedly playing the same Bach fugue on the piano. Piet uses his good looks and charisma to attract the attention of both men and women. He carries on an affair with the lady of the house, and other servants as well, admires the magnate (despite sleeping with his wife), and begins to bring the boy out of his obsessive-compulsive shell. Yet the economic crash of 1907 looms over it all. History of a Pleasure Seeker has received mostly positive reviews with the Washington Post saying, "There is an almost magical quality to all this that had me thoroughly engaged from first page to last."
